Observability systems are no longer an optional extra, tacked on to an application platform. They are a critical source of the data used to automatically scale, repair and operate applications. The availability characteristics and failure modes of in-band observability, embedded within the application platform, and out-of-band observability running on a separate platform are radically different. This talk will make the case that both are required, and that the correlation of metrics across multiple observability tools provides new system health signals.
